It is hard to fully own your career choices!

It is hard to fully own your career choices!

It sometimes astonishes me how much say others have in our lives and careers. Others are curious about the choices we make as a child, as a teenager, as an adult as well as aged person. Others want to influence our decisions, comment about our decisions, and comment about our choices and at times criticize if we do not follow them.

Starting this week on, let us look at a series of examples of how different people influence us and then decide if it is positive or negative.

The first example for this will be choice of education!

Recently, I was talking to a lady who is a Chartered Accountant by profession. She has a daughter who just completed studying class XII. I asked the lady what her daughter was planning to study. She replied “My daughter is actually interested in studying engineering, but I asked her to join BCom and then do CA like me.” I asked her why she did not allow her daughter to pursue engineering. Her response was interesting though not logical. She said, “In my family, my father was a CA, I am a CA and I want my daughter too to be a CA.”

Should the daughter pursue what she is interested in or should she take up a career just to align with the family pattern? Keep tracking this space for more interesting real life examples.
